A very common misconception is that if you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and you marry or are in a long term relationship to someone from another country, that your application to sponsor them is guaranteed to be approved. Nothing could be FURTHER from the truth! EVERY application submitted to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is carefully scrutinized to determine 2 things:
- The relationship is genuine; and
- The relationship was NOT entered into to gain Canadian immigration status.
Too often, sponsors and applicants do not take this type of application seriously. They know that their relationship is genuine and think that the Visa or Immigration Officer assessing their file will “believe” them. Given that over 20% of these types of applications are REFUSED, it is safe to say that “belief requires proof”! Roxanne Jessome knows this process very well. She sponsored her husband to become a permanent resident of Canada before she became a Certified Canadian Immigration Consultant.
“I can honestly tell you that going through the sponsorship and application process for my husband was one of the most difficult times of my life.
I didn’t have any knowledge of immigration law or procedure at that time but I was a successful business owner and professional. I naively thought that it couldn’t be very difficult and made the choice to save money, not hire a professional and do it myself.
I have often said that it was one of the worst decisions I have ever made. If I will pay a mechanic $60 to $80 an hour to fix my car, why wouldn’t I pay an immigration specialist to help me reunite with my partner in life?
Eventually, my husband was approved but not until we dealt with an extraordinarily LONG processing time (almost 1 year), a gruelling interview, and spent significantly MORE money travelling to see each other than we would have spent on a representative!
Now that I am trained and experienced in immigration law, I can plainly see the mistakes we made in our application that led to long processing delays and an interview.
Both my husband and I regret our decision not to hire a professional because we lost months of valuable time together and the emotional anguish was very difficult to bear.
When I became a Certified Canadian Immigration Consultant, I made a promise that I would NEVER let one of my clients suffer because of innocent mistakes or omissions that lead to delays in processing or full refusals. I have walked in their shoes and know exactly how powerless and helpless it feels to have your fate rest in the hands of a visa officer who has never met you and will decide your life based on a few pieces of paper. It’s hard for anyone who has not been through this process themselves to fully grasp the devastating emotional effect it has on a couple. But I FULLY understand what they are going through, and support them every step of the way.”
